ARTIST BIO
Chedine is a self-taught mixed media artist based in Marrakesh.
Born in 1995 in Rabat, she left Morocco at 16 to study politics and philosophy in Montreal, Canada. After a year of studying in London, her career in conflict research led her to Addis Ababa, where she worked for five years.
With its distinct culture and iconography, Ethiopia is the place where Chedine defined her visual identity. When she lived there, painting became an essential way for her to navigate depression, anxiety, and hopelessness in the face of war.
Born and raised by the Atlantic shore, Chedine is fascinated by underwater worlds, and especially jellyfish, which are at once elusive, ominous and sensual. Over time, these creatures have become a symbol of turbulent mental states, looming in her paintings in unsettling ways.
Chedine is also a writer and was among the winners of the 37th Prix du Jeune Écrivain. In 2023, she moved to Marrakesh to focus on her art and writing projects, working as a human rights researcher in parallel.
